Meet Our Makers/Artists
William Mans is a self-taught artist who started his working life in the 50's in banking in London. After a couple of years William found this did not fire his passions at all so he took off for Australia and the adventurous life it would offer. He was there for five years beginning in the mining industry and finally ending up in Melbourne where he co-owned a fashion boutique.
Affairs of the heart led him back to London and the years that followed saw him pioneer a vinyl graphics business and own a craft shop in Somerset. In 1999 life took another turn and art became the driving force in his life.
Soon he discovered his art was selling and in 2003 he was commissioned to paint the Christmas card for the prestigious Theatre Royal in Bath Somerset which was part of their fund raising activities.
Art has been his life ever since, if, as William says "art is work". He enjoys watercolours mostly and is at present specialising in animal portraits and house portraits, although he welcomes commissions on any subject.
Artistically created works based on Celtic, Norse and ancient cultures hand carved on slate and wood. The pieces truly capture the uniqueness of the Artist’s work. Gold, Copper, Silver leaf enhances the exquisite designs from these ancient cultures.
The inspiration to create these pieces has come from far and wide, through time and memory.
A chance meeting with a Welsh Gold Miner and spending time gold panning in the mountains inspired the use of gold leaf - I think of it as a little bit of Sun energy.
Three months touring the West Coast of Great Britain from the smallest city to the edge of the North Sea has re-kindled a love of our ancient land. Visiting Celtic tombs, long barrows, henges, seas, lakes, rivers and forests have re-charged my life force enabling me to create this beautiful artwork for you using a combination of natural and manmade materials.
The Art is created by drawing and carving with hand chisels, Dremel, knives, gouges and other pointy things. Gilding and embossing with Gold, Silver and Copper leaf.
All my Art is a little piece of me – emotions, experiences and surroundings all play a part.
Each piece is unique and can never be replicated because the natural ways of slate and wood dictate, to a point, how the final piece with evolve ready for you to enjoy for years to come.
I've been crafting for as long as I can remember in one form or another. As a child, I remember trying various crafts, such as crochet, knitting, sewing, lace making, macrame, woodworking, and over the years have continued to be obsessed with making "stuff".
I've made various home decor pieces, curtains, cushions, and also enjoy upcycling bits of furniture and repurposing items that may otherwise be discarded. It's just so satisfying to be able to complete a project and proudly say 'I made that!'.
My main crafting obsession over the last 10 years has been paper crafting, in particular card making and book folding, and my craft cave is overflowing with various items, that are all "essential" to feed my crafting obsession, it's my "happy" place.
During lockdown, and with extra time on my hands I wanted to try my hand at something different. I still have a ceramic glazed plate I made at primary school, and an idea began forming... 40 something years later and I have once again been crafting with clay and have combined my love of various paper crafting techniques, such as embossing, stamping, and decoupage in order to decorate my finished ceramic items.
A new crafting obsession has been born and is slowly taking over!
